Use the Power of Blogging to Help The Under Privileged

by Yan Susanto on November 24, 2008

If you’ve been following this blog, you might have noticed that on last session of Ask My Readers #2, I asked my readers the following question,

If you have the privilege of donating your monthly online earnings for one month, which charity organization would it be?

First thing first, I’d like to offer my sincerest appreciation to those of you who have taken the time to suggest your preferred choice of charity organization.

I’ve picked 3 of them and I’m creating a pool (see below) to further let everyone help me decide the final one that has the highest vote.

Now to help you make a better voting decision, I’ve included a brief description of each of the organization and what they do to make a little difference in the life of those ‘the underprivileged‘.

World Vision

World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.

Thanks to Jeremy and Sire

Feed The Children

Feed The Children is a non-profit relief organization that delivers food, medicine, clothing and other necessities to children and families who lack these essentials due to famine, war, poverty or natural disaster.

* I swear someone actually suggested this but I just couldn’t find it on my comment section. Still a huge thanks to your suggestion.

Teen Challenge USA

Teen Challenge offers hope and healing for those in life-controlling problems since 1958. Teen Challenge USA provides staff training, curriculum, referrals, promotions and accreditation to a network of over 200 centers nationwide.

Thanks to Ryan

You might be asking why I have a certain affiliation for the underprivileged childrens. Well, to tell you the truth, “I’m an orphan who did not have the privilege of parental love and care since young…

God has created my destiny for a reason and I’ve lived my entire life appreciating what HE has given me so far – the power of independence and survival. OK, that’s enough. The rest is history.

Your Vote Can Make A Difference

Leverage the Power of Your Blog

I’m the midst of planning one project that are special and interesting here at thoushallblog.com for the benefit of the underprivileged, I wish I could spill the beans right now but I couldn’t as everything is still in the process of making sure the mechanism of it goes as per its original plan.

The only thing I can say right now is that the project is dedicated for the benefit of one of the charity organizations you’re voting above.

You can have anything you want just by helping others to get what they want – Barack Obama

That being said, I might need a couple of extra hands here so if you are keen to be part of it, please do leave your intention on the comment section below. I’ll take note of it and when the project is about to get off the ground, I’ll feed you with more details.

None the less, if there is one thing you can possible do…is to blog about it in any possible way you can. Create as much awareness as you can possibly create and get your readers to vote here. It’s no obligation. I just believe in the power of leveraging everyone’s social network for a Good Cause.

Yes, You and I Can Make a Difference Today

PS: I’m not accepting any donation here, if you feel the need to do so, please do it at the respective organization listed above. As the saying goes, “Whatever Goes Around, Comes Around”.

Last but not least, any valuable suggestions and feedback is very much appreciated. Thank you and I love ya all.

I believe you need my vote right?

If so, I vote for Feed The Children or World Vision.

As long as it isn’t some name with USA in it, i’m content.

I’m afraid I’m confused here. Care to let us know your reasoning?

Well, it’s just a personal beef.

They seem to not be prepared. Watched one of the Ms. teen USA mess up on Youtube and I shudder everytime after that.

Tom Smith December 16, 2008 at 6:04 am

Umm, good reasoning.

Anyway, I voted for Feed the Children.

Its hard to chose just one. We have so many problems in our own country yet, there are children who don’t have food and clean water. If I had to choose now, it would be Feed The Children,

I was thinking of doing something similar myself in my own community. I know there are many underpriviledged people in my own community and would love to contribute.
I was thinking along the line of people with disabilities myself. Since most of them live on low income, I figured many I could provide a few of them with new laptops to be able to surf the web at least through a whole year.
Still working on the details.

Hey Bruno

That’s indeed very nice of you to do something for your community. However, I think a desktop might be a better idea than a laptop which can easily be taken away.

I don’t how much would a laptop cost in your country but here it’s pretty expensive and has its resale value. You’ll be surprised what people can do in desperation.

That’s just my 2 cents

I’ll be glad to help you, Yan. I’m personally sponsoring a child through World Vision. A kid from Dominican Republic. He write to us once in a while, talking about his situation and thanking me.

It feels good to see what little money you’ve spent makes such a big difference in other people’s life.

By the way, Zig Ziglar, I believe is the first one who said “You can have everything in life that you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” If memory serves me right, it was from a 1980s marketing seminar that I’ve got my hands on.

Hey Andre

You are in. I’ll give you the details real soon. Oh yes, I’m too sponsoring a child from Indonesia. I always believe, “Helping others is to help ourselves”. Truth is we will never realize how fortunate we are till we do something for the underprivileged.

Thank you for your support and about the quote? I could have made a mistake but that’s exactly what Obama quoted in one of his speech. Still it’s a great quote.

Yan

Michael Aulia November 25, 2008 at 7:58 am

I’m sponsoring a child at the moment through Compassion.com.au. All of your money goes to the kid (for his/her education, health, etc). You’ll get letters from the kid and vice versa (you can send one to him/her)

More details here: http://www.michaelaulia.com/blogs/how-to-sponsor-a-child-through-compassion.html

But yeah, glad to see fellow bloggers who are not just focusing on how to get more money online :)

I wonder how I could have missed your article…I’m glad you are doing something for the community too. Stay tuned with us.

I must say that original quote was made by Zig Ziglar, not Barack. But what can I say: I’m a sales guy.

Max November 25, 2008 at 12:47 pm

Yan, great post and once again a reminder for all of us to share good fortunes. If you’ll setup a donation on your blog, let me know – I’ll contribute. I think if 10, 20 or 100 bloggers will donate to your fund – we all can sponsor several children thru you.

Congratulations on choosing to live a successful life with the trials you have been through, I commend you for that Yan.

It is very hard to choose just one charity, there are so many needy people out there, and when I go to restaurants and realize how much food we throw away every year while people are starving it really is a travesty. I gave some money via John Chow charity drive all ready last month and I give to my local shelter every year, I wish I was a millionaire I would give more.

Hey JR

Appreciate your kind words. Yes, life is all about what we choose and appreciate what we can’t. Thank you.

I wish I was a millionaire I would give more.

It’s never about how much money one can give, it’s about what one thinks inside. Compassion can never be measured in terms of money and that’s what I come to learn.

I ran the special for a whole month offering a discount coupon and there wasn’t any takers.

I continue to support the cause and hope that other will donate to similar organizations.
