The 10 Highest Paid Domain Names Ever

by Yan Susanto

It’s just so amazing the kind of money someone will pay for a domain name. I mean the kind of money that could last a generation to some people. You’ll be surprised that tens of millions of dollars are exchanged during the resale of domain names every year. Phew!

Well, I’m not in any position to make any judgment whether it’s worth the dollars or otherwise but I do believe it must have made some business sense for the buyer to do so. After all, a few millions may just be some loose change to really big enterprise. Right?

So here’s the top 10 highest paid domain names ever [updated]

10. vodka.com
$3 million

9. wine.com
$3.3 million

8. korea.com
$5 million

7. asSeenonTV.com
$5 million

6. casino.com
$5.5 million

5. business.com
$7.5 million

4. diamond.com
$7.5 million

3. porn.com
$9.5 million

2. fund.com
$10 million

1. sex.com
$12 million

[updated 2008]

1. autos.com
$2.2 million

2. mortgage.com
$2.2 million

3. express.com
$1.8 million

4. feedback.com
$1.2 million

5. find.com
$1.2 million

6. wallstreet.com
$1 million

7. wallstreet.com
$1 million

8. sky.com
$1 million

9. websites.com
$970,000

10. drugs.com
$830,000

The above list only reflects the resale price of the said domains and not the price originally paid for, as such domain names such as yahoo.com and Google.com which still belong to their original owners are excluded from the list.

If Google.com ever been available for sale, without doubt it will be the most expensive domain ever that will surely dwarf the price paid for sex.com.

Yet Another Most Expensive Domain Names

It is reported that CreditCards.com was sold for 2.75 millions in 2004 and in September of 2005, vip.com was reportedly sold for 1.4 millions.

If blog.com is ever sold, I’m wondering how much would it be worth? Anyone?

PS: I’m offering this domain at a really bargain price of 1.2M, if you are interested, please contact me for details. I could always arrange a private sale.

Wow. All I can say is that domain real estate entrepreneurship is really worthy sometimes.

Similarly I wouldn’t have thought it to be such a profitable business in the first place. It’s just so unthinkable that something which never really exists is worth lots of dollars.

It is quite sad to see what domains are thought to be “most valuable” nowadays. Money, Alcohol and Sex:(((
I’d better see Love, Life and Hope there…

Yan May 31, 2008 at 12:37 pm

@Polina – Similarly so, it’s much easier to err nowadays than to do good. Thank you for your refreshing opinion. It’s very uncommon nowadays to hear the language of love and hope in our daily life.

It would be even more interesting to find out who actually owned and sold each name.  That’s what I want to know.

Why is your spam protection question so difficult?  I had to get a calculator.

Huh, it is probably one of the simplest math I could have found on the net.. but I appreciate your sense of humor. Thanks for dropping by, Queen Sharon.

That little three letter word does have some people hoping to have it sometime during their life. While others love getting it! (sorry about that Yan, I’m terrible at crude humor lol)

All I know is I got into the internet gaming business to late, I wish I would of gone into it 5-7 years ago. I know I prolly wouldn’t be working at this horrible job I hate. Lots of people who got into the game early are prolly sitting on a sunny beach right now drinking Margaritas. Definitely those who sold some of those domains for millions, absolutely amazing. I still have profited pretty good from becoming a webmaster, I just wish I was smarter. There’s lots of people who don’t even have to work during this time of crisis, which is pretty cool. Wish I was one of those people!

Some years ago I sold my family-name domain, a dot-com domain I acquired for free as part of my first internet service with a provider in San Diego. These were the very early days of the web.
Well, I held onto it, paying the yearly fee for about five or six years; but never used the domain to set up a web site.
I got tired of paying the renewal fees (which were higher than they are these days, by the way).
Just then a company in the printing business contacted me: their printing business had the same family name as mine and they were putting together a web presence and wondered if I’d sell my domain to them. I asked how much they were offering and they said “oh, we could go as high as a couple of thousand.” Well, I needed cash and I said I’d think about it.
At this point I should have contacted a domain name broker or something, but I didn’t. When they called back I said okay, give me three grand and they couriered a check out to me in a day or two, with documents to sign.
Now I found out that this domain name, as a dot-com version, is worth about two hundred grand !!! Crazy me! I could have held out and eventually bought a HOUSE with the cash I’d get now for it !!!
“Live and learn” is what my dad always says.

The sale of the domain TVEverywhere.com at $24 million is the highest selling domain name in Internet history; far surpasing Sex.com’s selling price of $14 million.
