The Best Places to Get Quality Backlinks

by Yan Susanto

Previously on thoushallblog.com, I revealed a little secret of link building with an article, What They Don’t Teach You About Link Building which has become one of the most popular articles on this blog. The most popular article is A-Z Blogging Guide for Beginners, just in case you have missed it.

To recap, what they don’t teach you about link building is that with little effort and consistency, you can easily work your way into the Top Commentator list by commenting on other blogs in similar niche.

Once you are in the top commentator list, you will gain sitewide backlink and get to enjoy the PR juice from the blog. All you need to do is to be active and engage in the discussion by not spamming leaving quality commentary that adds value to the conversation.

Top Commentator = Google PageRank + Technorati Rank

Google Pagerank

With the impending Google PR update soon, the more backlinks you get from high PR blogs, in theory the more PR you will get on the next update.  It’s the simplest and most effective link building strategy any beginners should undertake in pursuit of better search engine ranking.

Just in case, you aren’t in the know, here’s how Google calculates PageRank to give you a pretty good idea of how many backlinks you need to get your PR.

In much the same way that Google ranks search engine results by link popularity, Technorati keeps track of who’s linked to who and assign Technorati Authority accordingly.

As you build more links by being in the Top Commentator list, you will gain more authority and see an increased in your Technorati Rank.

List of Blogs with Top Commentator Plugin

So here I’m attempting to compile a list of blogs with various PageRank (presumably correct at the time of this writing) to help you jump start your link building campaign and get that coveted PR status, speaking of which I haven’t got it myself yet as this blog of yours has only been in existence for less than 3 months.

[Updated: March 2009]

[Updated: July 2009] Apologize for the inconvenience. The plugin that displays the list isn’t working anymore.

The above list is taken straight from my bookmark and has been updated with the recent Q2 PR update and it will continue to grow as I’ll be updating it with more blogs of PR 1 and above.

To The Blogmaster

Ultimate Blogging Theme

If for some reason your blog is not listed here, please state your intention for inclusion on the comment below and I’ll put into the list on the next update. However, I reserve the rights to reject any blogs deemed inappropriate.

thanks for the info Yan and taking the time to email me. I will most likely move into the self hosted for wordpress as it seems to by such a great platform for blogs. As far as the error messages go I was told it sort of deters google from drilling deeper into your pages if those errors arent fixed…. Anyway thanks again.

hi,
A great list and a great blog.
thanks a lot for helping me who is having real tough time making his blog famous.

I would just like to ask you one thing
You also must have started from a single blog once, how long did it take you to secure a page rank 1 for ur blog
Thanks in Advance

Yan March 17, 2009 at 2:55 am

Jason

Time isn’t a factor in getting a PR. Backlink is. The more inbound links from authority sites you have, the higher is your PR. Focus on creating more contents to your blog, getting a PR 3 nowadays is easy. To go beyond that is quite a task.

Yes, it will show up on your blog reactions. Keep in mind that Technorati Authority is the number of blogs linking to your website ONCE in the last six months.

So the next time you get backlink from the same site (assuming that you’re still on the list the following month), it will not be counted as ‘authority’ but it will add to your blog reactions.

Hope that clears your doubt.

hi yan, does have not long to visit this blog. yan I want to ask, where my blog has been deleted from the server, whether that influence to increase google pr, I lost all baclink?
BTW thanks for the upgrade to the list

Yan March 30, 2009 at 4:53 pm

Hey

What do you mean by “deleted from the server”? Upon checking, your site is indexed by Google. Perhaps you don’t rank in the top 100 for your keyword…

Is that what you are trying to say? If that’s the case, it means that you’re sandboxed by Google. It does happen to newer sites. So keep building your inbound links and that’s the only thing you can do right now.

I think you may be the only one to have mentioned this. I too am on several top commenters lists but they do not show up on Technorati, some do some do not.

The other factor seems to be once you are on that list, Technorati won’t count you twice. So after 180 days that link will drop off your authority.

speaking of backlinks I have a question about that. When I do a check on my blogs or a website of mine for backlinks using the link:http://multiplayersportsgames.synthasite.com I do not get any backlinks that show up on google? I know I have backlinks but for whatever reason google isnt showing them. The multiplayer sports games website has backlinks from many places and I cant figure out why google wont give me credit. Its on the first page in msn and way back on page 33 in google. weird. Anyone have any input with what I could do with http://multiplayersportsgames.synthasite.com? Thanks in advance.

Multiplayer Sports Games´s lastest post..you can choose what link to display here.

Ned Carey April 5, 2009 at 11:49 pm

The Google toolbar shows your site as “Page Rank information is not available” I take that to mean they think your site is a spam site and they don’t index it. Perhaps it just means they don’t give you any credibility yet.

Are your links “no follow” for example your links here are not counted by Google.

I also see that your articles come from article databases. If you don’t have any unique content why should Google send their searchers to you? How about the games, are they unique to your site? Are they warez? These are all factors Google considers.

Also the Link: operator in Google will only find a small subset of the links Google knows about. You can sign up for Google’s Webmaster tools and find both more links, and what Google thinks about your site.

I just read a great book about sharing the “Go Giver”. One great way to share is by offering a do follow blog. My blog is do follow as a way to give something back to my regular readers. I must admit I was a little surprised also when I saw Yan switched to No Follow.

However we must remember that Yan has given us a tremendous resource here with his blog. He has shared a phenomenal amount of good information for free. The value of the information here infinitely outweighs the fact it is no follow.

Yan has been very generous with what he offers here.

Thanks, Ned. You’ll be surprised to know that 40% of the comments this blog received each day were deleted for being “irrelevant” or to put it bluntly, spammy.

@kyrious

Those comments that you see here are those deemed to be relevant to the discussion and adding to the conversation while the rest made it into the “black” book.

I can’t imagine the worst when it’s dofollow. That being said, I have no regret switching to “nofollow”. I’m sure one day when you have as many “unwanted” comments as this blog does, nofollow might be the best option.

It’s just a matter of time.

Hope you understand…..

Yan

Ned Carey April 6, 2009 at 1:11 am

Yan,

Did the change to do follow make a difference in the amount of spam. I would think spammers are going to come do follow or not.

Off topic, There was a PR update in the last week and I took a 1 point hit. I see you are a PR3 did that change?

Ned

Ned Carey´s lastest post..How to Negotiate a $1.5 Million Home

Yan April 6, 2009 at 2:05 am

For obvious reason, there is an added incentive for spammers if it’s dofollow. Services such as commenting on dofollow blogs are being sold openly in some forums. Just so you know, for as little as $10, you can get links from 100 dofollow blogs easily, regardless of PR.

Yan
PS: No PR change for me this time. It remains as PR3.

“I also see that your articles come from article databases. If you don’t have any unique content why should Google send their searchers to you? How about the games, are they unique to your site? Are they warez? These are all factors Google considers”.

Ned I asked a SEO question. Although my site isnt about SEO specifically, the question I asked was related to seo so yes the it was relevant to this blog. Im not sure how your site that discusses negotiating a real estate deal or an ipod is any different from a my game site?

Ned Carey April 6, 2009 at 2:59 am

>Ned I asked a SEO question.

And I gave you an SEO answer.

What I understood your original question to be is. Why does Google rank my site lower than MSN.

1) What kind of links do you have? If you links come from sites that Google considers spam sites then they won’t count them for you.

2) Are you links followed or no follow? Do you understand what that means? Many that come here are new and may not understand that Google doesn’t count all links. MSN will count links from this blog Google will not.

3) Duplicate content. If your material is not original then Google would rather send their searchers to the original source. There is nothing wrong with using content from article databases but don’t expect it to help you with Google searches.

I use some content from others like the video on my recent post. Usually when I do I try to add my own comments to add value, but either way I don’t expect Google to rank me high for that. If all you content is duplicated Google will think there is not much reason to send anyone your way.

But after doing a little checking, the real problem seems to be you have very few links. Yahoo site explorer shows 8. Website Grader shows 9. That is not very many in the greater scheme of things. I have thousands from upwards of a hundred unique domains.

My apologies to Yan for such a long off topic comment, but he asked and I didn’t want to leave him hanging.

Ned Carey´s lastest post..How to Negotiate a $1.5 Million Home

Yan April 6, 2009 at 3:29 am

Thanks for running the show here, Ned. You’ve done a great job “not to keep him hanging”.

@Multiplayer Sports Games

Aside from what Ned has tried to explain to you SEO-wise, you need to realize that Google uses a different set of algorithms to rank pages than that of MSN or Yahoo.

For more accurate representation of your backlinks (assuming they are relevant), you need to check from Google Webmaster Tool as what Ned has suggested above.

Here’s my advise: It’s perfectly fine to use dupe contents but you can’t have the best of both world by using a free blog.

In the eyes of Google, dupe contents + free blog = spammy site. You need to choose either one.

Please remember that.

Yan
PS: In all honesty, you probably won’t get this kind of advise anywhere so kudos to Ned for being ever so patient. He is one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met online. Take my words.

Your List is very good but I have a query ?

i heard that sudden increase in backlinks can ban your website.
so if we get that much increase in backlinks by Top commenter module [ because it have very viral nature ] will this ruin our all seo afforts ?
secondly if you got so much links from Top commenter module but all of sudden the blog admin reset the counter or somewhat delete the module then all links will disappear. so what will this effect on website’s ranking ?

i will appreciate your reply.

thanks

You have your point, FA. If you get too many incoming links too fast, it kinda raise a red flag.

You are in the business of article directory and I assume you’re aware that manual submission works best for natural link building. Otherwise, keep the no. somewhere between 20-50 a day. Once you go beyond that, it will “kill” you site (read: sandboxed).

Yes, the links from the top commenters will be reset every month as such those links are not permanent but at the very least it’s counted as a link in the eyes of SE.

Will it improve your ranking? You bet it will… if you know how to let SE knows you’re there….

And this is exactly what most people don’t do……

This is probably some of the best SEO reading I’ve seen in awhile. I, like everyone else on here, is looking for ways to improve their pagerank. I read a lot of places that said submitting articles to the different article submission sites will help boost PR, but can you overkill this theory? I say overkill meaning sending an article to 30-50 sites, wait a few days and send a different article to the same sites.

So far, I have a PR of 4, but I recently went through every page on my site, and made sure they all w3c validated. I figured that would help greatly.
