The Best Places to Get Quality Backlinks

by Yan Susanto on July 24, 2008

Previously on thoushallblog.com, I revealed a little secret of link building with an article, What They Don’t Teach You About Link Building which has become one of the most popular articles on this blog. The most popular article is A-Z Blogging Guide for Beginners, just in case you have missed it.

To recap, what they don’t teach you about link building is that with little effort and consistency, you can easily work your way into the Top Commentator list by commenting on other blogs in similar niche.

Once you are in the top commentator list, you will gain sitewide backlink and get to enjoy the PR juice from the blog. All you need to do is to be active and engage in the discussion by not spamming leaving quality commentary that adds value to the conversation.

Top Commentator = Google PageRank + Technorati Rank

Google Pagerank

With the impending Google PR update soon, the more backlinks you get from high PR blogs, in theory the more PR you will get on the next update.  It’s the simplest and most effective link building strategy any beginners should undertake in pursuit of better search engine ranking.

Just in case, you aren’t in the know, here’s how Google calculates PageRank to give you a pretty good idea of how many backlinks you need to get your PR.

In much the same way that Google ranks search engine results by link popularity, Technorati keeps track of who’s linked to who and assign Technorati Authority accordingly.

As you build more links by being in the Top Commentator list, you will gain more authority and see an increased in your Technorati Rank.

List of Blogs with Top Commentator Plugin

So here I’m attempting to compile a list of blogs with various PageRank (presumably correct at the time of this writing) to help you jump start your link building campaign and get that coveted PR status, speaking of which I haven’t got it myself yet as this blog of yours has only been in existence for less than 3 months.

[Updated: March 2009]

[Updated: July 2009] Apologize for the inconvenience. The plugin that displays the list isn’t working anymore.

The above list is taken straight from my bookmark and has been updated with the recent Q2 PR update and it will continue to grow as I’ll be updating it with more blogs of PR 1 and above.

If for some reason your blog is not listed here, please state your intention for inclusion on the comment below and I’ll put into the list on the next update. However, I reserve the rights to reject any blogs deemed inappropriate.

Till we meet again and happy commenting.

Thank you for this well written article. But I had difficult time navigating around your site because I kept getting 502 bad gateway error. Just thought to let you know.

So many blogs are getting the bejeezus spammed out of them that they’ve gone to nofollow or just plain turned off commenting. It’s sad, really, since community and conversation are what the net is really about.

What happened to the list of places where you could post backlinks? Ironically this still made for a good place to at least put a couple backlinks in :)

Great tips but is the price worth the effort? Too long time to spend to get it in my opinion;) Waiting for another tips to use, good luck!

Can you possibly post the bookmark to that plugin you were using so I we could see the list again?

Thanks for the information, I see that your page rank is slowly climbing up there. One question for you; Do you know when the next Google update is scheduled for?

Thanks,

Hi Yan,
I have to say that having top commentator would be one of the smartest things you could do if you have a young site and want to get a few back links. I think it is a small price to pay to get only a few spam items that manage to get through.

Thanks for giving this info on your site.

Where is the list of best places to get backlinks? On the subject of back links, I read that Google actually counts the links in no follow blogs but just doesn’t pass page rank or count anchor text? Does anyone know if this is true?

TheSEOChampion December 21, 2009 at 11:48 pm

Google does value and track any link to a given website. Google will use, the click through ratio, relevance of the linked page to the blog, page popularity, link popularity and bounce rate of those who follow. If you rank poorly enough for a given backlink you post. It can actually hurt Google’s ranking of your site.

2 Keys to Maximizing Link Value:

Post thoughtful and insightful content.

Create a call to action for following your link.

Make sure the page in your site fulfills your call to action.

Thanks for the info SEOChamp! I had no idea that Google monitors the click through rate on backlinks. You do have to have Google Analytics installed on your site for Google to see your bounce rate right?

These are some interesting backlinks tips, thanks for sharing! I’m currently in the process of gaining tons and tons of new backlinks to my blog, but it’s an ongoing process.

Great suggestion. Certain blogs will reward you for being a top poster with a link on their “top posters” page. I’ve seen some of these pages w/ PR5+!

I stumbeld upon this site and I thought I would just leave my fingerprint. I’ve been a marketer for 10 years and the information you pick up online never ceases to amaze me. Might work in some of your information in to my blog in the future. Keep up the solid work!

Never got the list but leaving a backlink anyway. Technorati seems to be taking a long time to approve new blogs these days. Im trying to find additional paces to work with.

I just put up my site and I’m working on getting it seen by google. So when I read this article, It helped me a lot! Thanks for your tips on getting back links

It’s encouraging to see backlink strategies that actually encourage useful discussion and participation, rather than the scatter gun techniques that can detract from an online community. Will bookmark for sure!

I love how most of the comments on this post are just spammers who have absolutely no idea what the nofollow is.

Great job on the post though! Just a shame about the comments.

I don’t see why people are so obsessed with PR and Alexa Rank. I’m a member on quite a few webmaster forums, and I always see people making threads asking how to get high PR/Alexa, and how people are trying to focus on raising both of them, when instead they could’ve been bringing in targetted traffic. It just makes no sense to me…. backlinks should be used to gain higher SERPs and sometimes bring in bits of traffic, not to gain PR or raise in Alexa.

Thanks for the good tips you put up on here. Am in much need of more tips like this so feel free to mail some to me. Am developing a web directory and it seems like these tips will greatly help in promoting it out there in cyberspace and getting the traffic it deserves.
