Blogging is a journey where every day is a new learning experience. In the beginning of it, we all read other bloggers’ blogs and pick up a thing or two. If there is one thing I’ve learned in the early part of my blogging journey is to invest on my own domain.
Do you have one? If you already own your own domain and are happy with it, read no more.
If you are NOT, I’ll tell why you should have one yourself.
Don’t get me wrong. It is perfectly all right not to own your own domain. After all why the hassle of registering a domain and finding a suitable hosting when you could easily setup your blog using free blogging platforms like Bloggers or even WordPress.com? It only takes a minute to setup and all for the cost of none.
Well, if you are happy with yourname.blogspot.com or yourname.wordpress.com, there is nothing wrong with it. It’s your choice. Maybe blogging is a new concept to you and you are still in the experimental stage or maybe you are just a casual blogger. But if you are serious about blogging and want to distinguish yourself from the crowd, you need to otherwise think of buying your own domain. More so, if you tend to blog for money.
3 Reasons Why You Should Invest in Your Own Domain
1. Increase Credibility
A blog is your virtual home on the web. It’s the place where you pen your thoughts and opinions about anything you are passionate about. What you say write is broadcast online. People will read and comment. If you want to project certain level of authority in what you write, say you are advocating the ultimate guide to making money online, you can’t help but to have your own domain to show the credibility of your opinion and the blog as whole. Otherwise, people may not take you serious enough.
2. Total Control
With your own domain and self-hosting, there is an endless possibilities of total customization. Beside the availability of many third-party plugins that will extend the usability of your blog, you can have total control of how you might want to customize the look of your blog by editing the template. You decide what you can do and can’t do to your blog. Certainly the look of your blog design reflects how committed you are to blogging.
3. Monetization
Since you have total control over your own blog, you could monetize it to earn some extra dollars using AdSense or other affiliate programs. WordPress.com is seriously lacking in this department. However, this is recommended only when you have enough traffic to your blog to justify it and don’t rush it.
To sum it up, you are still using free-hosted blog from either Blogger or WordPress.com and you are serious about blogging, why rent a house when you can own it? I highly recommend you to get your own custom domain before your desired name is taken. You can search and check the availability of it here. Happy blogging!
PS: If you have limited technical skill on how to install WordPress on your own, yeah you need a fair amount of it, I’ll be glad to help you with the setup. You just need to ask me.

Hey Yan,
I cannot imagine that there is no comment on this post and I for once got to be No. 1. Gee that sounds nice. In spite of the fact that this is one of your earliest posts, it’s a quality post and as usual provided your readers with useful information, especially for those just starting out. I could relate to what you’ve written having changed from blogger to Wordpress, changed my blog theme for monetization and creating credibility etc. So any prize for being your no. 1 commenter here?
