Optimize Your Blog for iPhone

by Yan Susanto

With probably one of the Best Innovation of the Year, Apple iPhone is set to become the most sought-after mobile platform. What more with the new iPhone 3G is now priced at a stunning $199 in US and Canada which is half the price of the original iPhone.

iPhone 3G

Well, I don’t have the actual data of how many iPhone users (the figure is estimated to be in 4 millions or more) but one thing is certain that Google reported 50 times more searches from the iPhone than any other mobile platforms.

The odds are more people will surf online with their iPhone than any other mobile platforms. Thanks to Apple’s Safari with its awesome zooming technology that makes web-browsing experience all the more user-friendly.

All these thoughts put together, it is not hard to believe that in a foreseeable not-too-distant future, there will be considerable amount of visitors browsing the web on their iPhone and this will contribute to a significant percentage of your blog’s visitors.

Don’t you think it’s about time now you optimize your blog to cater to these tech-savvy die-hard iPhone users? Surely you wouldn’t want to miss this emerging online market, would you?

Optimize Your Blog and Make it iPhone-friendly

iWphone

This blog has been made iPhone-friendly using iWPhone WordPress Plugin and Theme by ContentRobot. What it means is that iPhone users will view mobile-version of my blog using the theme optimized for iPhone whilst other visitors using the conventional browsers will still see my current theme.

How does it work?

This plugin will automatically detect the iPhone’s User Agent and fetches an optimized version of the blog contents, formatted perfectly to fit the iPhone screen. It literally strips away all the frills for quick viewing and easy browsing.

Installation

  1. Download and extract the iWPhone WordPress Plugin and Theme zip file.
  2. Locate the file iwphone.php inside the “iwphone-wordpress-plugin-and-theme” folder and upload it into your wp-content/plugins/ directory.
  3. Locate and upload the entire folder named “iwphone-by-contentrobot” into your wp-content/themes/ directory.
  4. Go to your WordPress administration area and click on Plugins and activate the plugin called “iWPhone”.
  5. Do NOT make the iWPhone-by-ContentRobot theme the current theme under Presentation.

Post-Installation

Here’s the deal. If you have installed the plugin but you don’t own an iPhone to preview it, you can share it with me here and I will visit your site to see if you have properly optimized it.

What’s your thoughts?

Have you jumped into iPhone wagon yet? Have you optimized your blog for iPhone? Do you think it’s more of a luxury for the privilege few and not a necessity? Let me know your opinions.

Good foresight Yan. The amount of mobile devices accessing the internet such as smart phones and PDA’s is only increasing with time. As prices come down, more and more people will find it affordable and jump on board. Speed is going up and prices are decreasing; thats the best part about technology. It’s amazing how the apple iPhone dominates the mobile hardware war. Very interesting statistics. Thanks for sharing the plugin.

Hi Colin,

Glad to have you back here. You are absolutely right. The speed and prices are moving in the opposite direction and iPhone is not an exception.

I kind of regret buying it too early. I could have waited for another month or so at much cheaper price but technology changes too fast I hardly catch my breath trying to keep up with it.

That’s the general consensus on the traffic from iPhone but a great deal of my time online surfing the net is done using my iPhone.

Anyway, thanks for your input and glad you drop by to my blog. I have been one of your subscribers right from the beginning. I like the way you present your articles on your blog.

Although the speed and prices are moving in the opposite direction, i think i still don’t have enough money to buy this kind of mobile phone. And for my part, this is a luxury and unnecessary! But i admit mobile phone is necessary in our daily life.’cause its convenience for communication, and now people cannot leave this tool.
