Blog As An Online Reputation Management Tool

by Yan Susanto

Most people who blog are blogging for either two reasons: making money from the blog or just passionate enough to blog (even without getting compensated).

Only few people do understand that blogs can be used as an online reputation management tool.

How is that so?

Let me explain. In an online business, or just even business in general, reputations are like “trust cards.”

Most people won’t even care to talk to you unless they know you. Even worse, they may even blacklist you if you have a bad reputation.

Another example is when doing transactions in forums. One thing to notice is that when you’re just starting out and you are virtually an unknown to everybody, they are skeptic to do transactions with you. They want to you to do a condition first before doing a business with you to gain trust. There’s no big deal about that and it’s the thing most newbie face when they jump into the online marketplace.

So why blogs?

It’s been talked about so much how search engines love blogs. Blogs are easy to spider, ranks well on some keywords and most provides high quality content (if not all).

online reputation managementWhen you apply for a job position, or have a joint venture with someone, the first thing the company/person normally do is do a short Google search for your name. Then obviously your name is going to appear on some high ranking social sites which then leads to your blog. If you’re a good online presence, then it’s pretty sure that people will link to you and by a good means.

You can easily notice that these well-known bloggers are the ones that have the most reputation! Guys like Darren Rowse didn’t just become a hit because of his blog. He actually became so famous because of the high quality content he is constantly producing, the great brand he has imprinted online and establishing the reputation as probably the top blogger in the industry.

What can these online reputation then lead to?

Count em! Aside from actually getting some really good revenue, there are far more important results one can get. These are being invited to speak at those great conferences, being able to hang out with other famous people within your niche, getting established as an authority, getting gifts from these companies who obviously want you to give them a plug and a whole lot more.

Believe me, having a blog is a BIG PLUS for a reputation! And having a blog with a great community is even better! But do always keep in mind that there are no shortcuts.

I believe that good reputation is what long term success of blogging is all about. So make sure you’re not just blogging for profits, or for passion or as a hobby. Leverage your blog, take it into the next level, and stick yourself into it.

In the end, its not just about how big you are making with your blog, or how unique your money making techniques are. It’s about how people trusted you and your brand.

And how well-recognized your name is.

I completely agree with this article. It wasn’t until recently that I realized how important and beneficial blogging can be. I’m in the life insurance industry, and I didn’t think blogging was something worthwhile. I’ve realized that it’s a great way for clients and potential clients to get to know you. Everyone has their own style of writing personality, and that shows through when you’re blogging. It’s also great to contribute the knowledge you have to the world wide web in a casual and fun way.

Unfortunately, the first time i starting using in the august 2007 is for making money in blogging. But i never think that monetizing a blog it’s not easy as i thought. Till now i don’t have a plenty money from blogging and since now i’m trying the tricks or tips for monetizing blog. Then i see your article coming with gaining trust in business with blogs. Now this is my chance to learn anything from You Yan to correct my mistakes in the past years.

In this article, what best to do you have to start Yan ? Gaining some trust first or making money first ? I think they all connected each other. CMIIW.

If i’m making double comment please delete the other one. The comment kinda error.

I think the “making money first” approach is really common when starting out with blogging and I don’t think its a problem. It’s good because in that way newbies would learn and understand it more.

W/regards to your question, although its possible to make some passive income while gaining trust, i think you should WORK first w/gaining reputation. I mean you could make $10 so easy but having a good rep would lead to good things (that would do you more $ hopefully)

I’m definitely in the 2nd category – I earn nothing with my blog. :) With millions of blogs out there, YES, your reputation is important and establishing your name in the blogging world is huge. Along with that, with the millions of blogs out there, this can be quite the challenge. Trust IS key, but trust, trust takes time… sometimes a lot of time.

thats totally true. I mean blogging anyway is an “underpaying job”. You see a lot of blogs (like thoushallblog) putting a lot of effort to produce top-notch content yet they’re not really getting the amount they should be getting for.

I guess most bloggers really don’t care much about the money (and I do hope thats the mentality for everyone.)

My personal views can be considered very opinionated and worse so it can have a reverse effect on my reputation. I agree completely that a blog can help our reputations but it can also hurt it if we have unpopular and extreme views. I’ve considered shutting down my personal blog just for that reason. I’m still undecided.

This is true. A lot of companies do a quick Google search on your name when you are applying for a job in the company. If your name shows up #1 on Google (YOUR NAME and not someone elses’ same name), then it can be bragging rights. Not saying #1 on Facebook or Myspace with your name, but your actual website. Things like this look great on resumes.

I’ve answered this above, gaining trust is definitely more important when you’re blogging because I doubt if anyone could actually even earn more than $50 if he doesn’t have any reputation…

At the end it’s like reputation is more than just trying to squeeze pennies into a blog.

I think that blogs instantly have more trust than say a website because they appear to be more real and open for a frank discussion.

Blogs also allow you to really show your personality so this is another way of increasing your trust with others and exapanding your trust card.

If you inject your personality into your blog you will also become a more real person, instead of a faceless entity.

And yes, over time you’ll develop a reputation for what you stand for, and what you don’t stand for too.

Building a million dollar downline is the ultimate goal of all network marketers. One of the first things you can do to build your downline and credibility online is by blogging. Besides, you can even earn additional money through affiliate marketing and paid ads if your blog has a tremendous amount of traffic. Blogging can be an automatic downline builder for your network marketing online business by bringing in free, fresh MLM leads and guaranteed mlm signups of really interested buyers who would kill to join your program.
