7 Deadly Sins of Highly Ineffective New Bloggers

by Yan Susanto

In what I come to notice, the majority of beginners that jump into the blogwagon have several commonalities. In this regard, they are more likely to commit one, if not all, of the 7 deadly sins of newbies.

Blame it on the “gurus” who are selling dream that blogging success can be achieved overnight with little efforts. Nowadays, a blog can be created almost at the snap of fingers.

You and I know that blogging is fun and rewarding and it can also be pretty frustrating at times. It’s also true that there is no such thing as instant success. It takes a great deal of commitment, time and efforts to see the fruits of our labor. Convince me otherwise.

This article is by no means the end-all and be-all of being an effective and better blogger, but hopefully it may shorten your learning curve and bring you closer to whatever your dream is.

blog for beginners

Deadly Sin #1 – Too many ads too early

There’s nothing more amateurish than seeing the desperate display of ads block on every possible space on a blog. Adsense aside, it’s pretty common to see 8 125×125 ads on their sidebar when 7 of them are empty. Why? It’s probably because John Chow has 8. If he has 10, they will have 10 also.

You see, there is no hard and fast rules when you should monetize. It’s a matter of personal choice. However, it’s advisable not to overdo it and distract your visitors’ attention away from your content with too many ads. Suffice to say, content is one of those factors that either makes or breaks your blog in its early stage.

Deadly Sin #2 – Too passive

The best way to get yourself noticed when you are a new kid in the blog is to go out and introduce yourself to the blogosphere. I can even begin to say that how many beginners don’t do this but blog commenting is the most effective and powerful method of propelling yourself from an unknown to possibly a celebrity. A case in point is Caroline Middlebrook who is still the undisputed comment queen.

Gone are the days when people will come knocking at your door, you need to seek them out. So the next time you lament why you ain’t getting enough comments, don’t be passive, go commenting and be the next comment queen or king.

On the home front, make an effort to reply to your comments and reciprocate the same by visiting their blogs. It’s a time-tested and proven strategy to build relationship with fellow bloggers. As the saying goes, “No blogger is an island.”

Deadly Sin #3 – Wrong focus

In any marketing principle, product comes before promotion and it’s sad to see that most beginners are either unaware of this or simply be in hurry in pursuit of popularity.

Getting the visitors is the easy part (see #2), converting them to be your returning visitors (aka: subscribers) is probably the hardest part. Who would be interested in a new blog, let alone subscribe to it? It’s not the ideal first impression for first time visitors.

My point is to worry less about traffic, promotion or subscribers in the early stage of your blog. Instead you should focus on creating quality contents you and your visitors can be proud of.

Deadly Sin #4 – Ignoring basic SEO

One of the most common mistakes beginners are more likely to commit is to take for granted the importance of permalinks. It’s the easiest SEO trick yet overlooked by many. Frankly speaking, ignorance is not an exception here. If you are still at a loss, here’s 15 SEO Tips for Beginners.

Deadly Sin #5 – Not proofreading

No one is expecting you to be perfect always. Even in the best of times, we’re all make some unforced gramatical errors but that’s not the issue. The fact that you proofread before you push the ‘publish’ button does say a lot about you as a blogger.

If you can’t be bother to proofread your content which is esentially yours, would you be atentive enough to look after your’s readers? Would you be diligent enough to provide the most valuable and informative contents in the best interest of your readers?

* grammatical errors are not proofread on purpose

Deadly Sin #6 – Faking your subscriber count

Despite all the bad publicity, blogosphere is never short of fakers who proudly display his/her inflated subscribers count. I recently came across a site with a decent 950+ subscribers on its chicklet and an archive as deep as 2 months. I clicked away with smile on my face. We certainly need idiots like them to remind us of the value of honesty.

Faking your subscriber count is the lamest and dumbest marketing gimmick. Don’t fall into the trap, it’s a sure-fire way of losing your credibility fast. There’s a real good chance you’ll never get it back.

Deadly Sin #7 – Not subscribing to thoushallblog.com

It’s probably one of the biggest sins any beginners should avoid. It’s highly recommended that you subscribe now if you haven’t yet as the best of blogging tips for beginners is yet to come. Didn’t anyone tell you that before?

There you have them all – 7 deadly sins to avoid. Don’t commit those mistakes, I have warned you in much the same way God had warned Adam not to touch the forbidden fruit.

So God bless you and I love ya all

Hey thanks for the mention in faking the subscriber count! ;)

I just want to point out that you have 10 ad spots… hehe just kidding!

Good tips and I think being too passive is a common one that should be avoided! It’s important to be all over the place and comment everywhere in the early stages of a blog.

Yan, #1 is important. For the longest time I had too many ad spaces available and it made my blog look desperate. Not good!

#4 – Beginners can not ignore SEO basics. They need to take SEO serious.

#5 – I hate nothing more that reading a blog with spelling mistakes. Proof read everything!

Wei Liang | ABloggerBlog October 29, 2008 at 10:41 pm

Hi Yan,

I certainly agree with sin #1 where new bloggers are placing ads all over their blog from 468×60 to 125×125 to embedded ads. It simply turns potential readers away from the blog since it is perceived as hardcore advertising blog with no value.

These are the group of bloggers that I categorised them under “Think that blogging is a get rich method”. After 2-3 months of trying, most of them give up as well because of the wrong mentality they adopted. Hope this post could help knock some sense into them.

Rarst

I’ve seen you pretty much on half of the blog I visited so I assume that you could be doing better than 60 a day.

Anyway, for the sake of discussion, what do you personally think is the problem? Are you targeting the wrong audience?

Rarst October 30, 2008 at 2:14 am

Hmmm… :) Rough ideas:

1. Techie blog with strong RSS theme. Visitors are fast to convert in subscribers and read in feed.
2. Google sandboxed me for a month until recently, not much search traffic.
3. Very little social traffic. Software reviews are hardly getting people excited (ok, I had one review that made me 2k visitors day… wish I could repeat that reliably).
4. Lacking manual promotion. I am targeting long-term stuff like commenting, links, guest posts, some long-tail keywords at times. Since I am introvert I do not use social methods like asking friends for stumbles much.

Overall I think my content badly lacks viral factor. My posts are something useful and/or deep to think about… but not something to easily explode for spike of traffic.

Rarst´s lastest post..Logitech MX500 – ancestor to Revolution

Yan October 30, 2008 at 2:29 am

Actually, Google is still sandboxing some of my inner pages to this very day but I’m cool with it as I made it up by actively commenting on other blogs (actually newer blogs).

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that when Google decides to get me out of the sandbox, I will see better organic traffic. It’s currently standing at about 20% so not an ideal number so to speak.

Since now you are out of the sandbox, don’t throw in the towel first. Perhaps, the number will get better next month. A friend of mine, Michael Aulia is doing very well with his tech blog so probably it’s worth to take a look.

Mitch October 30, 2008 at 1:14 am

Great post, Yan. Out of all of these, the only one I committed, with my main business blog at first, was #2, not posting enough. I definitely make sure to post at least twice a week on that one right now, but on the particular blog I mention here, I make at least one post a day.

I’d like your opinion on this, though; I was reading one of Problogger’s post, and he said he likes to have 5 to 6 posts a day (though I’m assuming it’s in more than one blog). I’m thinking that even for him it’s too much, because people overall just don’t have the time to read that much from one person. Your thoughts?

Mitch´s lastest post..Credibility, Article Writing, And Marketing Products

Yan October 30, 2008 at 1:44 am

Mitch

If I’m not mistaken, he is managing 5 blogs so one article per blog is not too much for a problogger of his calibre. I recently stumbled across a video interview of him where he briefly mentioned about how he has perfected the art of mind mapping to consistently come out with top-quality article every single day. Speaking of which I’m yet to comprehend fully….

Anyway, I don’t think he post more than 2 articles per day and even if he does, one of them is a short announcement or something. With a subscriber base of 60K, I reckon there will always be people of diverse interest who are not getting enough from him.

well I’m not too sure what your reading habit is but in my case, there are blogs that I read daily and they are some that I check on every alternate day. The last thing we need is information overload which can be pretty distracting sometimes.

Yan

Mitch October 30, 2008 at 4:27 am

I probably subscribe to about 150 blogs or so; I kind of speed read. Some people post once every couple of days. Some try to post at least once a day. Then there are some who are posting something 6-10 times a day. One site, Lifehacker, has multiple posts, but I learned that’s because there are multiple posters. Others post whatever hits their fancy, whether it’s news or pictures, but multiple – multiple times a day. However, because they’re more like snippets of information, it’s easy to get through.

Truthfully, if I put my mind to it, I could easily post 3 or 4 long blog posts a day, but I don’t do it because I want a long post to have time to be read and consumed. The short ones,… well, those are fun, short, and in between, and I don’t do it often.

People who fake their subscriber count are wankers. I can’t understand why people would even want that kind of “fake success”. Even if it helped them gain another 200 “real” subscribers, it was under false pretenses, and that will continue to snowball until everyone realizes they’re a lying douchebag anyway. lol

Hi Yan,

I never understood the faking of subscribers and any semi-intelligent individual would figure out that the count is faked. That is pretty lame.

Welcome Apollo and thanks for leaving a comment. Well, I suppose those who fake it are just seeking for instant popularity. In most cases, they care nothing about reputation anyway.

Jay October 30, 2008 at 10:47 pm

LOL! Okay, I didn’t expect that last one… that’s funny!

But I’d like to comment on your “too many ads” thing too early… well, it depends on how you get things going. For instance, I’ve started a few blogs and put Adsense ads right away because with my knowledge, I know how to get the search engine traffic to get those ads clicked on.

So, I guess it all depends… there isn’t a set time when you can monetize or not.

I am guilty of a couple of these, I think I monetised too early for example. Just something that should go along with proofreading is spell checking, the button is right there in WordPress yet so many bloggers forget to use it before they publish a post. It only takes 10 seconds to do a spell check, so there is no excuse not to!

I love it Yan, very good post. Great list, and you’re so on point. I think number 7 is the worst offense by far!

Keep it coming buddy.

Blogging is not as easy as some think, it is hard work.

But blogging is also loads of fun and a great way to earn income. I see many newbies making the mistakes you have outlined above and i pretty much made them all when i started out.

But over time and by doing some research into the blogging field, anyone can avoid the pitfalls. They can all start by reading your awesome blog. Good looking out.

Missy.

P.S. Thanxs for visiting me earlier. Peace.

Yan,
I love #7!

I never understood why people would fake their subscribers anyway. I mean who really cares?

Hello Yan,
I was following comments on other blogs and landed here. You have great info!
I have been reading other post about the fake subscriber numbers and just find that kinda funny. I can even remember ever noticing a number on any blogs I visit. Guess they wasted their time trying to impress me.
I would say that one of my biggest pet peeves is a blog that does not have the owners name. I do not like to address them as Admin.
The ads on some blogs become over whelming and I think it takes away from the content.
As for grammar – forget it. I would never make a post if I worried about that. LOL!
I am off to look at your other post and commentors blogs.
Thank you!

TheMoneyac November 3, 2008 at 4:44 pm

Great article !

Thank god as far as I know, I don’t do any of the sins, I did, but not anymore.

I think there are too many blogs that have affiliate links longer than the actual content, and blogs like those just disappear in no time !

TheMoneyac

Hey Yan,

175,000 new blogs on each single day? This is an impressive number. What kind of websites are classified as blogs according to technorati, I wonder?

#5 Proofreading is very important for blogs with a corporate or somewhat professional character. If there are too many typos, it gives a sloppy impression to the reader. If you write about LOL-Cats on your personal blog you might get away with it :)

Having a lousy webhosting, like free webspace or blogging platforms, is also a sin. Having a good webspace is cool, even if it costs a little money. There is no free lunch on the internet.

But the deadliest sin of all: ignoring security updates for Wordpress.

Hi Yan, That has to be one of the smartest lists I’ve seen so far. Very nice job. Your insight is very impressive. I especially like #7 :)

Thanks, Brian for your kind words. I was enjoying myself writing #7 and that’s what matters most to me.. You can’t away the fun out of blogging…

PS: Not enjoying myself right now though as I’m replying to all the comments at Starbucks without all the privacy. I’ve been deprived of internet connection for the last 4 days straight and it’s still counting…;)

Car Trader November 4, 2008 at 2:18 pm

Thanks for pointing out some of the things that we tend to ignore more often than not and then later drool over it by complaining that the results don’t go in our favor. C’mon, lets face it that, we have to give sometime for things to happen on their own rather than forcing them to happen.

Rodney Smith November 5, 2008 at 4:34 am

I think the passivity factor is crucial. When I first started reading blogs, I didn’t understand that the blog culture actually encourages interaction – I felt that I’d be intruding somehow by leaving a comment. Fortunately I no longer have this hangup!

I should confess I did the majority of the sins mentioned by you. It is very crucial, should say. Among my biggest sins were not proof reading and wrong focus. Now I got rid of all mistakes and do my best to succeed.

Great title. ;)

I’d definitely put “having nothing original to say” in that list somewhere. So many bloggers just echo what others have already said and then wonder why they don’t get any traffic.

Become a leader in your field, and as often as you can, read (and get ideas) from outside of your niche. That goes a long ways in helping you write something original!

You have made an excellent point here. I couldn’t possibly said better myself. I’m hoping that I don’t fall into the “copycat” trap myself.

Thanks, Lindsay for sharing your input and appreciate your taking the time to come back here again.

I really like the points that you have made in this post.

Especially:
#1: yes, when I see a blog that is cluttered with ads, I get suspicious.
#2: One thing I am beginning to realize is the importance of commenting back in my own blog. I missed out on this point before.
#3: Great point here – just focus on delivering really good content and all the rest will fall into place.
#7: This is so funny and really good. OK, I get the message and will subscribe. With content this good, I’d be a little crazy not to.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and appreciate your effort to follow me by subscribing. I’m glad you like the article and hey, I totally agree here, “just focus on delivering really good content and all the rest will fall into place.“..

That’s the crucial factor indeed. I’m looking forward to see mor eof you, John. We’ll keep in touch.

Great post. Honest raw truth. I can agree with each point you made. However, I mostly like number 6. lol….. I have taken down my Subscriber feed count since its not much at this time. But I appreciate each one that has signed up :) …. I know that in two major “Guru” blogs they offered the information on how to fake the count on your Feed for a large increase of subscribers. Sure made me see them in a different light. I understand they are teaching you all the tricks but does make me questions the truthfulness of the monthly income. :)

BTW – Number 1 . I feel that it would depend on the content. Shopping etc….
