Just to address point number 1: The tool mentioned doesn't give a good indication of overall web site performance as it just grabs the index html. Images, JS and the overall way the page has been put together have a large impact on loading time. Get your blog visitors to test your site from lots of different locations using a tool like Webslug and get some optimisation tips using the yslow plugin for firefox. I must say, all of your tips are extremely useful. Many thanks for sharing them with the wordpress community. quite a few blogs take ages to load, authors simply install it out ofthe box, concentrate of the blogs looks, bombard them with attractive images and sit bck hoping for the best, not realising the discomfort visitors face waiting for their pages to load.
