5 Ways to Get Targeted Traffic to Your Blog

by Lee Rowley on March 14, 2009

There are plenty of ways to get traffic to your blog, but not all traffic is created equal. In order to build a financially successful blog, you need to attract the right kind of traffic.

After all, it doesn’t matter what your hit counter says if visitors aren’t sticking around to help your blog grow (and make money).

The right kind of visitors to your blog should be:

  • Interested in your niche topic;
  • Ready to put your blog’s information to use;
  • Excited enough about your blog to tell others about it.

In short, you should be using techniques to get targeted visitors to your blog, instead of just worrying about the numbers. It’s much better (and more profitable) to have 100 targeted visitors coming to your blog every day than it is to get 1,000 untargeted visitors a day.

5 Ways to Get Targeted Traffic to Your Blog by Lee Rowley

Here are 5 ways you can streamline the promotion of your blog to focus on getting more targeted traffic:

#1 Participate in discussion boards and forums that are related to your niche.

Topic-specific forums are gifts for the internet marketer, because they give you immediate access to a group of people who are already interested in your subject matter. The hard work has already been done for you – all you have to do is build relationships with other members of the forums, and they will naturally want to visit your blog to get more information.

A word of caution when using niche forums and discussion boards: Don’t make all of your posts about you. In fact, very little, if any, of what you say in a forum should directly promote your blog. That is what your signature line is for. Add value to the discussions, be genuinely interested in what other members have to say, and you’ll get quite a few clicks via your signature line.

#2 Leave meaningful comments on related blogs.

Commenting as a means of promotion has fallen out of favor with internet marketers as of late, largely because it is time consuming, and because most blogs are no-follow, meaning your comments don’t directly help your Google PageRank or search engine rankings.

It’s true that blog commenting won’t bring you floods of traffic. What it will bring you, however, is a steady stream of visitors who have learned something from your comments, and who want to visit your blog to find out more.

The key is making sure your comments are meaningful. This is where most bloggers get lazy, and then wonder why commenting isn’t bringing any traffic. Comments should real value to the post – if you can add insight that the blog poster didn’t include, expound on a point in the post, or offer alternative suggestions and ideas, your comments will go a long way toward helping you establish yourself as an authority in your niche.

Often, you’ll even attract the attention of the blogger who wrote the post, which can bring guest posting opportunities, inbound links, and other treasures that will help you bring in even more targeted traffic.

#3 Build your own social network.

Popular social networks such as MySpace and Facebook can be good for promoting your blog, but when you create your own social network, you can tailor it to your niche. If building a social network from the ground up isn’t within your reach (this requires a greater investment of time and money than most new bloggers are willing to make), you can easily create your own niche-specific social network on Ning.

The advantage of having your own social network is that, as the owner, you automatically achieve “authority” status. Who would create a topic-specific social network if they weren’t experts in their niche? (Quite a few would, actually, but the important thing is the perception of authority – that by virtue of owning a social network, members see you as being an expert.)

#4 Get a proper domain name.

This should be obvious, but I’m constantly surprised at how many marketers promote blogs with .blogspot and .wordpress extensions. This gives the impression that you aren’t serious about your blog, so it turns off people who are serious about learning about your niche.

Ideally, your domain name should contain the main keyword your blog is targeting. This will help your blog gain better search engine rankings, and it will also make it clear to potential visitors what your blog is all about.

Proper domain names can be purchased for $10 per year or less, but the value a good domain name can add to your blog is priceless.

#5 Keep your post content consistent.

If you’re running a blog about wine, you don’t want visitors to land on a post about your vegetable garden. This confuses visitors and leaves a bad first impression – and for a confused visitor, the first impression is the only one your blog will ever make.

This isn’t to say there shouldn’t be variety in your blog posts – no one wants to read the same thing day after day – but your posts should somehow relate back to the main topic of your blog. Using the above example, this might mean suggesting a particular type of wine to go with a fresh vegetable plate, or explaining how gardening is similar to winemaking.

I’d say the most important points here are consistency and community involvement. The more time you invest in commenting and forum participation, the more you’ll attract a large following of loyal visitors.

I haven’t tried making my own social network. Maybe I should give that a shot. ;)

Lee, Blogger's Workshop March 14, 2009 at 11:03 pm

Corey,

Getting your name out there through blog comments and forum postings is indeed critical to blogging success. It can seem like an arduous task, but it has a cumulative effect – even if your community involvement efforts remain constant (i.e., you spend the same amount of time every day commenting and posting), your results will follow a bell curve. I think I might graph that and post it on Blogger’s Workshop.

Creating your own social network is a lot of hard work, but I’ve found it can be very effective. Not very many bloggers use this strategy, so it can give you a nice advantage.

Thanks for your comments!

This is an interesting list. However, I would like to add more about building social network. We all know how popular Twitter is today. Unfortunately, I noticed that most of the users are dying to have tons of followers but not choosing wisely. They don’t realize that eventually not all of them can be potential customers, since they belong to a different niche.

Furthermore, they are getting addicted to it and forget the real purpose why they are there – to make money online.

Thanks!

Hey Lee

I am quite agree with your 4 number points. I do not know but when I saw a good post at blogspot or wordpress than I always wonder why this blogger is not having his/her domain and get some reputation.

People do not see blogspot as the serious source of information … they do feel that this is just there to build the links and there is nothing.

Nice list. I definitely agree with you about the value of forums, I’ve been surprised by the amount of traffic I’ve gotten from just a small number of posts with a signature link.

It’s not always the biggest forums that send the best traffic either, you should look for several forums to post on regularly to get the best results.

Considering that my blog covers multiple subjects, the consistency in subject would be tough. Kristi,

I have to say that, since my very early blogging days, I’ve never ran a blog with multiple themes. I believe it would make monetization far too difficult for me. Perhaps that’s not your goal though.

As far as running specific themes on set days of the week… I’d say that’s consistency in its own right. As long as your readers know what to expect, then you’re going to maintain a loyal reader base. I’d go nuts trying to keep all of that straight, myself. :-)

Buying your own domain name is HUGE. I really believe that not having your own domain tarnishes your credibility. Consistent post content is always something I’ve firmly believed in.

I think my favorite of the five though is the discussion board posting. You’re right, the people on forums related to your niche are easy targets, and they will be the return visitors. Since starting my blog I’ve actually faded away from posting on specific forums, but I am wondering if that was a mistake and I think I’m gonna make an effort to be a little more active again.

Also, I definitely agree that 100 targeted visitors is better than 1000 non-targeted visitors, though I’m setting my sites at 1000 targeted if at all possible, at least for my niche!!

Great post so I shared it at Twitter, FriendFeed and cliKball to benefit more readers. I highly recommend creating a “Persona” for each blog and separate related accounts on Social Networking sites that are specific to that niche.

It is easy to grow a Twitter account specifically about a particular subject using Twellow and Twitter search. I linked a post on how to create a geo- or niche- targeted Twitter account to this comment (above) to make it easy to locate. (It is not recent enough for CommentLuv to pick it up.)

Lee, Blogger’s Workshop´s lastest post..What’s All The Noise About “Affiliate Theme”?

Internet Strategist March 19, 2009 at 7:17 am

I agree with Lee that waiting for search engines to bring you traffic and recognition is going to take a long time. It is also going to be less effective as the use of search engines declines because Internet users find other methods to find what they want. This is already happening.

A better way for your good content to bring traffic NOW instead of later is to position it where it can be found. One way to do that is to create relationships with people who are already heavily involved in Social Networking.

You can find them using Twellow (see the post I linked from the words Internet Strategist in this comment – that post is also too old for CommentLuv to pick it up).

Start retweeting their Tweets, recommending them on #followfriday, commenting in their blogs, and sharing their blog posts. Don’t focus on the most famous who may be too busy to reciprocate. Focus on those who are very active at Twitter, have quality blogs are are NOT super famous. If you don’t know who they are ask me or check my #followfriday Tweets on Fridays.

If they’re sharp they will check out your blog and share your posts for you. I share what crosses my path and so do some others so a comment in my blog or a DM or Tweet to @GrowMap on Twitter is all it takes.

Use Retweetist to find excellent Twitter users and to find people worth retweeting. (Just follow @Retweetist.) Sharing excellent content will grow your Twitter account faster. It looks like this should have been another blog post instead of a comment. I hope Lee doesn’t mind.

Another thing which I do believe is consistent post. As there are many bloggers who are offering same kind of service to others as well. There is only one way to keep them coming to your blog and that is keep posting on regular basis.

All big blogs have at least one post a day (some time two to three as well). So just keep posting attractive and fresh content always.

True, most big blogs do publish content frequently. There are a few exceptions – Yaro only posts to EJ a couple of times a week now. It’s a matter of setting the pace for your blog postings and then sticking to it. If you start out posting every day and then slow down to once a week, your blog is going to be in trouble.

Hey!
I love these tips, I literally just started my blog a few days ago and already got 120+ visitors after i started posting my site and the general blog topic on my facebook. Friends are a great start, but through google’s analytics I noticed that I was getting visitors from 20+ states which made me even more excited and take a break from studying dynamics to look at this blog right now!
lol, I do have a question though, so far I have pretty much written about random happenings in the world i find interesting. I am considering building two halves to my blog. One for technology developments specifically a different type of engine (Stirling Engine) with which i am obsessed. The other half would be fun worldly topics I like to write about as well. Is it better for me to really try to focus on just these two topics then random posts all mixed together? I would imagine by establishing a separate section for my technology chatter, I can get followers who will read that, and followers who would read my other news section… Another question I have that I could prob find out with some more research, but anyway is it better to start out with a CPM or PPC advertising? Right now I have Adsense set up. Obviously im not expecting anything for a while, 60 visitors/day is quite modest : P but when i get to the point where money is possible which is better…? any tips on that? Thanks so much… I liked the retire at 21 thing, im gonna check that blog out as much as possible too! Your a great source for starting out and I appreciate you caring enough to help us 60 visits/day guys out : )

I have been blogging since last 1 year and i have noticed that people gets attracted quickly towards sentences like “How To blog”. Making combination of key phrases like “How To” and using the keyword you want to target like “blog” really forces readers to explore it. Also, link bait is a successful technique to drive immediate traffic on your blog. Also, building social network helps you to build your reputation and members encourages other people to join your network. This way you don’t have to find readers for your site.

I would say, similar to commenting on other blogs, forum participation also is time consuming. I think they both go hand in hand but with forums you get targeted traffic. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Build links intelligently is v important. Seek links from authority sites in your industry. If local search matters to you (more on that coming up), seek links from trusted sites in your geographic area…

I’d say the most important points here are consistency and community involvement. The more time you invest in commenting and forum participation, the more you’ll attract a large following of loyal visitors. And a better way for your good content to bring traffic now instead of later is to position it where it can be found. One way to do that is to create relationships with people who are already heavily involved in Social Networking like facebook or twitter. And Keep your post content consistent, posts should somehow relate back to the main topic of your blog. Thanks for this great tips.

I agree with most of the points, Lee. As much as I would like to have a magic bullet, the truth is some of the methods of driving traffic to your site are time-consuming, but they work.

Do you really think though that creating your own social network is better than becoming the “hot stuff” on Twitter or Facebook.

If you don’t mind, I wanted to suggest more reading on target internet marketing information overload – my recent blog post.

Thanks,
Ana
