49 Tips to Become a Better Blogger

by Yan Susanto on February 4, 2009

Would you agree that Blogging is an art, which can only be mastered with experience?

Well I believe it is, because not everyone can blog. Then the ones that do conjure up the determination to do so usually give up in a few months.

As you go along, you pick up tips and learn new techniques which can’t be bought for money. Unless of course you go for “classes” but there is a lot of things that just can’t be taught through a 1 hour lecture. The only way you can expose yourself to these learning curves is by getting your hands dirty – in a metaphorical sense, of course.

When I first started, I knew absolutely NOTHING about writing for a blog. My inexperience mixed in with my curiosity saw many failures, but that beacon of hope stayed alive with every small success. This inevitably shaped my blogging style to such a degree that despite failure upon failure I kept true to myself till the day I saw a sense of accomplishment grow inside of me.

I can tell by reading this list that you had a rough and tough time with blogging in the beginning. Some of the things that you mention seem to come out several different ways, like jealousy and the Internet not being friendly all the time. Must have been some crazy things happening, but glad you made it through to share some of the tips that helped you.

Number 30 resonated the most with me: Seek and you shall find.

This is not just a Biblical reference, but the truth. If you seek, you shall find all the answers you need to take it to the next level, all the people you need to network with to build your awareness, all assistance you need to help you get that blog looking just right, all the encouragement that you need to make it happen.

It is true that the Internet isn’t always nice, but it isn’t always evil either. And if you have a good spirit about yourself, work in earnest, approach people humbly, I think you will find there is an abundance of people on the Internet willing to almost bend over backwards to help you.

Shoot, we are on the site of one of those people that is willing to bend over backwards for people. I know he sure did help me out. I am talking about none other than, YAN THE MAN!!!

Good post, thanks for sharing!

Thank you ever so much Taylor, I greatly appreciate your detailed reply. I must say you cannot be any closer to the truth.

It all depends on how you take your approach to the internet, and sometimes ways that work for someone else might not work for you. It’s all about finding your voice in this vast open communities.

When I first started, unfortunately I was exposed to more of the “evil” side than of the good, perhaps maybe that’s why you picked up on those things throughout my article – but then again, now reflecting on the past, I’m glad that it all happened. It really helped me get a grasps of things quickly, and almost forced me to learn things even quicker.

One way or another, we all make progress and that’s the wonder in Blogging!

sum everything up, Don’t give up!

from the perfectly drawn out list in this post, it just goes to show that we all have our ups and downs, but as cliche as it may sound, there’s always that light at the end of the tunnel.

don’t let the criticisms or the seemingly result-less feeling get you. just try to weather the storm and you’ll basically be in the midst of sunshine.

Anraiki February 4, 2009 at 8:06 pm

I have to disagree with Tip #49 on the last piece of sentence: “money is the root of all evil”

It is a mere saying but money can be used to induced other to do greater and good deeds.

In the past, I started quite immature, and perhaps I am still am (stop me if I am :D), but growing into the person I am today, I have gained experience that I can relate with these tips. Especially #19 (The internet may not be nice.), where some people who do not read the article, post a reply, and say something nasty and incompetent. I have trouble with #23 but I am doing my best to keep that in mind (which brings up to #16: having a open mind).

But, I want to make a big deal on #27 (Everything takes time, including blogging). Many people consider blogging simple and easy. To me, it is not! It takes A LOT OF TIME. In fact, instead of time, I would rather say it is more of a lifestyle. Like art, or illustrating, or farming. Blogging, like anything else, can be taken to many degree. Casually or seriously, but the idea of casually making “easy” money by blogging should not be thought of.

Because nothing is easy in life, everytime comes down to hard work :)

Anraiki´s lastest post..Css Flawed? Tables for the win?

Alex | Blogussion.com February 5, 2009 at 6:01 am

I love some of the points you made in that Anraiki. Really nice perspective on things! :)

I can understand your opinion on the last rule. Money turns people into a lot of things. Of course it can be for good things in the hands of good, mature people. But for the unfortunate group of people who blog solely for money, well they’re kind of missing the whole point of what it is to really blog in my opinion.

I see it all the time on larger blogs. People read the title of the post and think that is all of the information they need to make a good comment on the article when it’s really not. But the internet is not nice at all, even in the blogosphere. But like they say “the internet is serious business”.

OPB February 5, 2009 at 12:18 am

personally i have found that using twitter to promote your blog has been priceless in traffic and generating leads that convert to sales… it seems like such a tight nit group that are actually active… minus the spam you’ll find on so many other social or “web 2.0″ websites used for self-promotion

OPB´s lastest post..great message

Janith | Blogussion February 6, 2009 at 4:24 pm

That’s quite true OPB, but it’s all about getting the right followers. It’s harder than some of the other techniques of getting traffic because you can’t really market your profile to get more followers, well not effectively anyways.

So, it’s all about personality and if your profile is worthwhile listening to.

A really good example of this is @darthvadar – he’s got heaps of followers and his tweets are quite funny :P

Gina Chen February 5, 2009 at 12:43 am

Great list!

I especially like number 1: “Blog about what you are passionate about, not for the niches that promise a lot.”

I’ve read on other “how to blog” sites recommedations to blog on “hot” topics just to drive up traffic. I think that goes counter to what blogging is. Sure, you want hits. But I think if you blog about something that you don’t feel passionate toward it shows in your work.

Blogging is personal. Good advice to find your passion.

Thank you for your input Gina,
I picked that reason as number one for exactly that reason.

I think it’s almost evenly balanced when it comes to bloggers who blog for personal reasons V. bloggers who blog for the sake of earning.

In the long run, you’ll find the second type of blogger usually dies out..

Diana Freedman February 5, 2009 at 1:17 am

These are great tips. To elaborate on #27 (because I think this is an important one), don’t rush posts. You don’t have to post every single day to have a great blog. Take the time to create quality content that your readers will appreciate more.

I think something I definitely need to work on is goal setting (#10). I tend to get carried away with how exciting getting traffic can be that I forget to set goals with a timeline, which could help me to create a better blog.

Janith | Blogussion February 6, 2009 at 4:28 pm

Very well said Diana, I don’t think I could have put it more simpler myself!

Blogging Daily V Blogging periodically both have their pros and cons, but when you have considerable time between each posts – it really gives you time to research and develop ideas to very deep extents.

Personally I think new bloggers should try to write daily, still with the same punctuality and quality of content then once you build a solid foundation – move to more periodic posting.

Andre Thomas February 5, 2009 at 5:48 am

I don’t know if I agree with that. Here’s my .02.

Yes, blogging about something you’re passionate about makes the job easier and it keeps you going longer. But what if your passion is in owning a successful blog?

I think that drives you to post quality content about a subject you’re only mildly interested in.

And to tell you the truth, I own several of these blogs.

There’s a conventional wisdom in marketing. That is to look for the market first before producing the product. If no one’s looking for it, or the market is too small and dominated, then forget it…

Unless of course you’re not blogging to make money.

Find your passion. True. My passion lies in marketing. But that doesn’t mean I have to blog about marketing. And if your passion lies in blogging, that doesn’t mean you have to blog about blogging.

There’s a great book on the subject. It’s called Desperate Buyers Only. For those who are interested in the topic, you should check it out.

Andre Thomas´s lastest post..How To Acquire Testimonials Even If You’re A Complete Newbie

Janith | Blogussion February 6, 2009 at 4:37 pm

Firstly, let me thank you for your comment Andre.
You’ve made some really good points that I would like to expand on, and through in my 2 cents too :) I hope you don’t mind my using dot points to answer your questions, but it seems more viable from a reader’s point of view.

- To your first question, I’m sure everyone is passionate about owning a successful blog. However you cannot meet that passion if you blog about something that promises a lot, because without your invested interest you are most likely to give up even before you get a hint of success.

So, the idea I was trying to get through was that you pick a niche that you are passionate about – then you are most likely to fulfill your other passion of owning a successful blog.

- I totally agree with your comment on “Find your passion” because ultimately that’s what keeps us going. That doesn’t mean you have to stick to it, and anyone with decent knowledge in the blogging field – will encourage you to try new things and explore new areas. Because we didn’t seek, we shall not find ;)

Once more, I want to thank you for comment Andre! It’s pleasing to see a different perspective of things but personally I think we are both on the same mindset when it comes to ‘finding your true passion’

T Edwards February 5, 2009 at 7:47 am

Hi Yan,
Not to hijack your post but I can think of a number 50 for you:

50: Push yourself. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Write things that you’ve never written, say things you’ve never said, research things you’ve never been interested in.

I find that this type of open, intelligent thinking can make one smarter as well as keep you motivated and inspired.

Ahh, that should have been in the top 49 – along with Critical Thinking.

Act as things happen and don’t try to plan too deep either.
In reality most things don’t work as planned because there will be changes that need to be made, even minor changes.

If you ready to try out new things, take calculated risks and not afraid to experiment you will become more successful than most passive bloggers that tend to “let things follow” and not mess with too much with how things work.

It’s all about inflicting a difference in the Blogosphere – good or bad inflictions depend on your our personal morals and our reader’s morals but either way – that’s how you will make people notice you.

The two most important are likely passion and networking. The passion will help you push thru the tough times or lack of early rewards (profit, influence in the niche, etc). It will also help to push you to do the little things (marketing, research). Networking is the social aspect. Building relationships with other blogger and readers helps with filling your posts with comments, getting guest posting gigs, and building a loyal following.

Numbers 32 & 40 work well together. Not only is it really not necessary to post daily or more (I strongly believe that), but it could in fact harm some blogs. Especially on any “blogs for beginners”.

I know when I’ve posted more then my norm on some weeks I’ve received comments about being overwhelmed…it sounds like their joking but I can read between the lines.

Well Said Dennis, I totally agree – but this is where you need to know your audience.

Some people like reading articles upon articles of just the smallest updates.

While others rather reader a good lengthy article once or twice a week.

End of the day, we need to tell ourselves that it’s impossible to please everybody – so you should write what you think best suits your skill and your reader’s needs.

Great tips more than enough to think about in just one sitting. Definitely worth coming back to and quickly revising as you bring up some very good points.

I sense that you are a very purest blogger. I just checked out our blog and I was right, because I see only one advertisement and it’s for a sweet product. You also have awesome well written content.

I have much the same approach when it comes to blogging, well for my own my blog. I don’t like to have ads on my blog. Not because money is the root of evil. But because I don’t think it flows in the design.

I’ll be reading your blog more. Thanks!

Thank you for kind compliments, Wynter!
I sincerely appreciate them :)

We never intended Blogussion to be a money-leeching blog and we never will.
That single advertisement was a trial more than anything – but it kind of fit’s in place and we decided to keep it.

However, as your blog gets bigger and better – there will inevitably be costs involved. I think till we can’t pay off our expenses from our personal funding – we won’t bring in advertisements.

Till then, let us pure bloggers rejoice! :)

Also, Thank you for following Blogussion, Alex and I appreciate everyone’s contribution and participation on any part of the blog.

I guess this sum up all the things that all the bloggers need to know about blogging your post no.39 “Do something extraordinary for people to notice you.”…is something im looking forward to explore and your post no.43 Reward your readers, the only rewards i could give them right now is to redirect them to some sites that can give them a great blog resources like your blog post .You are bound to fail, so learn to accept it”since i start blogging this is the first thing i’ve learn if you could only see my blog before it already gone to at least 10 makeover

Janith | Blogussion February 6, 2009 at 5:25 pm

Thank you for the reply Kyrious.

Doing something extraordinary is surely the quickest way of getting noticed. However it’s easier said than done ~ but if you put in the effort I’m sure your contribution to the community won’t go unnoticed.

Rewarding your readers can be more than just one thing. If the task is something important perhaps you can reward them with a premium WP-Theme? You can buy a few good ones for fairly cheap price from DigitalPoint, SitePoint and TemplateMonster if I remember correctly.

Also provide them with Do-Follow blogs to comment on but be selective in you hand them out to – the last thing you need is spammers diluting your precious “findings”

Finally, I actually think it’s a positive to see blogs go through changes and updates. It’s a sign of activity and the owner has an invested interest in the blog. The last thing I like to see on a new blog is a a basic theme slapped on without any modifications..

Yes I had the same thoughts, this might be of interest – i found a cool new website (not supposed to be public yet) that has reports, free seo tools, seo tips, worksheets and all kinds of helpful SEO training for members. Its free for a short time think it still will be

I’m sorry if I’m mistaken – but didn’t you post the same exact comment somewhere else? If I remember correctly ~ It was on Blogussion on even perhaps here…

If so – please refrain from spamming..

Nice catch, J. At first glance, the comment looks very legit. Heck! This is a nofollow blog so no real benefit anyway.

On a side note, you’ve really done a superb job responding to all the comments here and I hope you are gonna do the same at Blogussion.

No worries, Yan.
Quite ironically to your compliments, I’ve been a tad busy lately and couldn’t even reply to the comments on Blogussion over the last few days.

Things have freed up over the weekend, and I’ll definitely be around here a lot more ;)

Hey Yan, whatever happened to #50, did someone interrupt you and you lost your train of thought? :D Anyway mate I have to disagree with you as anyone can blog but not everyone can do it well or consistently. That’s all I can pick on today so count yourself lucky.

My favorite point of your list is #9 # Be creative, don’t copy others. I reckon that are way too many bloggers out there who seem to be missing this valid point.

Great tips, Janith!
I am an avid believer in #42-”Make Friends”. I love making friends with new bloggers, and established bloggers alike. It’s in my personal nature (even in off-line life) but I find that it can benefit my blog as well.

Janith | Blogussion February 14, 2009 at 9:34 am

Hey EmmaB,
Thank you for your pleasing compliments :)

“#42 – Making Friends” is definitely one of the biggest highlights when it comes to blogging.

Some bloggers find it pretty hard to get along with there readers, and some can even be seen as anti-social (boy, I’ve seen a few alright) it’s almost as a robotic downfall – as some new bloggers just post content, upon content and just “expect” popularity.

It doesn’t work that way, you must be friendly and robust in your approach to your readers – and ultimately the more satisfied people means more word-of-mouth ‘viral marketing’ which is by far one of the strongest ways to spread the word :)

Elizabeth Barrette February 9, 2009 at 2:10 pm

I’ve been writing professionally for years, and only started a blog after I had a book published. Blogging is excellent for promotion. But I was just amazed at how many people start a blog and then quit after a few days or months. I’m used to hanging around with writers, and we tend to be PERSISTENT. So that’s a real advantage with blogging; I have no trouble conceiving of a project that will take a little time a day for the next 6-12 months before it really blossoms. When I write about blogging, I look for ways to give other people a leg up on that.

#27 Everything takes time, so does blogging..and so does my adsense earnings :(

Janith | Blogussion February 14, 2009 at 9:45 am

How long have you been blogging?
Ho wlong have you been blogging WITH Adsense?

Adsense has personally be a roller coaster for me, and I’ve realized that other methods of earning money online has worked better for me. Affiliate products have been by far the best – but the few cheques Adsense rakes in – is nothing short of satisfying…but it took me some time to build up to it..

Well over at Blogussion, Alex and I are starting to reward our readers – as of now we are offering them Do-Follow Blogs and only exposing them to our Subscribers (RSS/Email)

We are planning to release a custom-made Wordpress Theme only to our readers within this month which Alex will code himself.

I think giving out freebies and useful resources can be a great way to encourage more subscribers. Providing them new content can also be a good way, but not as effective as something they can use straight away.

In no way did I expected for everyone to agree with my points, in fact I was looking for some disagreement from our readers.

End of the day, everyone is entitled to their own unbiased opinion (that was one of the tips!) so given the reach of Yan’s loyal readers – we have many different people with very different experiences.

Once again, thank you for your wonderful compliments – I appreciate them dearly :)

Always appreciate more tips!! Interesting on how you said don’t stick with Blogger too long. Maybe that is why my followers are so low (probably other reasons, too). Is it possible to have a successful blog that provide insight without a tight focus? Isn’t passion and good writing enough??
